N LIBROS NUEVOS

Hardback. Series: Cambridge Companions to Philosophy. Ethics was a central preoccupation of medieval philosophers, and medieval ethical thought is rich, diverse, and inventive. Yet standard histories of ethics often skip quickly over the medievals, and histories of medieval philosophy often fail to do justice to the centrality of ethical concerns in medieval thought. This volume presents the full range of medieval ethics in Christian, Islamic, and Jewish philosophy in a way that is accessible to a non-specialist and reveals the liveliness and sophisti... leer más

    • Notas Bibliográficas: Oxford University Press, 2018. 274p. Paperback. J. Uden has written a very important, readable and intelligent new book. Unlike many other books on Juvenal, J. Uden does not place the poet in a generic sequence of verse satire. That field has been well ploughed, and it is not perhaps how writers actually work... This is a significant work and anybody who reads it will, like me, be challenged and inspired to read more. From its first adoption of writing at the beginning of the Late Bronze Age, ancient Cyprus was home to distinctive scripts and writing habits, often setting it apart from other areas of the Mediterranean and Near East. This well-illustrated volume is the first to explore the development and importance of Cypriot writing over a period of more than 1,500 years in the second and first millennia BC. Five themed chapters deal with issues ranging from the acquisition of literacy and the adaptation of new writin... leer más

    • Notas Bibliográficas: Cambridge University Press, 2018. 294p. Hardback. Series: Classic Philosophical Arguments. At the turn of the twentieth century, G. E. Moore contemptuously dismissed most previous 'ethical systems' for committing the 'Naturalistic Fallacy'. This fallacy - which has been variously understood, but has almost always been seen as something to avoid - was perhaps the greatest structuring force on subsequent ethical theorising. To a large extent, to understand the Fallacy is to understand contemporary ethics. This volume aims to provide that understanding. Its thematic chapters - written by a ran... leer más

In this updated edition of King Richard II, Claire McEachern provides a fresh introductory section in which she discusses the most important productions and scholarly criticism of recent years. • Notas Bibliográficas: Oxford University Press, 2015. 288p. Hardback. Scully has long been interested in the polis, as his excellent 1990 study, Homer and the Sacred City, demonstrated, and this new volume about Hesiod's Theogony is, in a sense, an extension of that interest. An equally exciting aspect of this comprehensive study is its clear and full discussion of Hesiod's until-now overlooked literary methods, in which personification reflects psychological reality, or flows from action, and in which common nouns, in their shifting meanings, follow the narrative arc of the poem. Helaine L. Smith, Semicerchio: R... leer más

    • Notas Bibliográficas: Oxford University Press, 2018. 272p. Hardback. Exorbitant Enlightenment will create something very important and timely: it will introduce a virus into our narrow and well-trod traditions of scholarship and habits of thinking with respect to our histories and theories of culture. It will join significant initiatives and projects which direct sceptical and challenging interventions at, for example, the nature of the human as distinct from the animal, the inevitability of the global as a reconciliation or agglutination of the national, the singularity and integrity of the local or specific as... leer más

It is an important book, not just because of the status and quality of the contributors which are outstanding, but perhaps even more so because this is a successful attempt at bringing together scholars working in related, yet all too often regarded or treated as different fields. • Notas Bibliográficas: Cambridge University Press, 2017. 318p. Hardback. Series: Cambridge Studies in Linguistics, 156. Prosody is generally studied at a separate linguistic level from syntax and semantics. It analyses phonetic properties of utterances such as pitch and prominence, and orders them into phonological categories such as pitch accent, boundary tone, and metrical grid. The goal is to define distinctive formal differentiators of meanings in utterances. But what these meanings are is either excluded or a secondary concern. This book takes the opposite approach, asking what are the basic categories of me... leer más

    • Notas Bibliográficas: Cambridge University Press, 2018. 254p. Hardback. Series: Cambridge Classical Studies. In the fifth century BCE, Melissus of Samos developed wildly counterintuitive claims against plurality, change, and the reliability of the senses. This book provides a reconstruction of the preserved textual evidence for his philosophy, along with an interpretation of the form and content of each of his arguments. A close examination of his thought reveals an extraordinary clarity and unity in his method and gives us a unique perspective on how philosophy developed in the fifth century, and how Melissus c... leer más
