Descripción

Founded in 1618 by Cardinal Federico Borromeo, the Ambrosiana Gallery is one of the oldest and most famous collections of art. Borromeo's artistic tastes, writes Gian Alberto Dell'Acqua, which favoured the classic sixteenth century artists and, among his contemporaries, the Lombard and Flemish painters, were typical of the principal Milanese collectors of his time. The central nucleus of the collection is due to Cardinal Borromeo, but the collection has continued to grow, with a long and continuous series of valutable gifts, up to the present day. The most famous wordks in the Gallery are Leonardo da Vinci's Musician, Raphael's great cartoon for the School of Athens fresco and Caravaggio's Basket of Fruit.
