Descripción

12mo. (22 [instead of 24]), 723 pp., final blank page. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten spine-title. Rare penultimate edition of the Corpus Iuris of the Republic of Genoa, first published by Franchelli in 1573. Among the principal regulations of the maritime republic comprised in this pocket-size work are monetary and prison laws, such as valuation and the liberation of prisoners on religious festivals like Christmas and Easter, as well as aspects of marital law including the case of the "fugitive wife". Further, it includes a brief history of coinage, intriguingly titled "De origine moneta". The popular handbook saw several re-issues in the 17th and early 18th centuries, the final edition dating from 1710. - Contemporary ownership ("Ex libris . ") to front pastedown, identified by a later hand as Augustinus Senior (1800-73); earlier ownership on title-page stricken out. Lacks the half-title. A clipping from a sheet of headed stationery of the municipality of Genoa is loosely inserted. A few small marginal flaws. Manno, Bibliografia di Genova VI, 25341. OCLC 249961409.
