Notas Bibliográficas

Small 8vo. Contemporary calf, blind stamped spine and covers with gilt angle pieces, spine with raised bands; slightly rubbed and lacking ties. A few woodcut initials and printer's device at end. [62, incl. 3 (of 4) blank leaves], 1015, (1) pp.; title slightly dust soiled, but generally a very good copy from John Evelyn's library (see Christie's, 16 March 1978, lot 1207).
A scarce collective edition. It contains the second edition of the De incantationibus (pp. 1 - 325; first edn.: Basel 1556), in which Pomponazzi, the leading representative of Renaissance Aristotelianism, very daringly applied naturalistic explanations to seemingly miraculous events, including Christian miracles, and the first edition of the De fato (pp. 329 - 1015), the significant treatise on fate, free will and predestination. They are the largest works by the influential philosopher, and both were published posthumously by the physician and philosopher Gulielmo Gratarolo (1516 - 68), who settled in Basel after fleeing from Italy because of his religious beliefs. DSB XI, pp.71 - 74. Caillet, 8818. Wellcome I, 5154. Thorndike V, pp. 98 - 110. Rosenthal 3020: «Très rare et fort recherché».
