'M.'s monograph is concerned with the last 500 lines of DRN Book Five, in which Lucretius gives an account of the development of human civilization. His aim is to defend the unity and integrety of this account; to support the analysis of it into two phases made by Barwick (.); to relate these two phases to the two stages that can be seen in Epicurus' short treatment in Ep. Hdt. 75-76; and in the light of this, to deal with some traditional problems of thes section of the DRN, most importantly those of the passage on the origin of religion (1161-1440) and the general question 'Ob Lukrez Kulturpessimist oder Kulturoptimist sei, bzw. in welchem Grade die beiden Klassifizierungen auf ihn zuträfen.' (p.51). The result is a work in the best traditions of German Einzelschriften; meticulously documented and patiently argued. (.)
