FIRST EDITION Engraved frontispiece, title with engraved vignette, engraved chapter vignette and initial. Contemporary calf, front hinge starting; fly-leaf with contemporary manuscript annotations. Small ownership stamp of George Stawell, Solicitor, Torrington, likely the great-grandson of the author Mary Palmer. CLARENDON'S ATTACK ON HOBBES' LEVIATHAN HYDE, Edward, First Earl of Clarendon. A brief view and survey of the dangerous and pernicious errors to church and state in Hobbes's book, entitled Leviathan. Oxford: at the Theater, 1676. 4to. Beautiful engraved frontispiece of mythological characters. Contemporary calf; small ownership stamp of George Stawell, Solicitor, Torrington, likely the great-grandson of the author Mary Palmer. First edition of Clarendon's famous attack on Hobbes' Leviathan which he claimed favored the domination of the usurping government that overthrew the king. Over half of Clarendon's book treats Hobbes' religious and political views on sedition, treason and impiety found in Leviathan. Even though Clarendon actually shared some of Hobbes' views, it should be noted that Clarendon claimed Hobbes to be "so ignorant of the law and constitution of England that he was incompetent to judge political affairs." $ 1250.00.
